Website Speed Optimization
Google's own research says more than half your visitors leave if a page takes longer than three seconds. Most local business sites take longer than three seconds.
Images compressed and sized correctly
the single most common cause — a 4MB photo from a phone camera being displayed at 400 pixels wide
Modern image formats with fallbacks
the same photo at a fraction of the weight, on every browser that supports it
Scripts that don't block the page from appearing
chat widgets, tracking pixels and font loaders are frequent offenders
Fonts loaded so text shows immediately
instead of a blank space while a font file downloads
Caching and compression configured at the server
usually free, usually not turned on
Measured before and after, on a phone connection
a desktop test on office wifi tells you almost nothing useful
Site Speed
Slow costs you twice
The obvious cost is the visitor who leaves before seeing anything. They don't tell you, they don't appear in any report you're reading, and they were often the one about to call. The second cost is ranking: page speed is a confirmed factor, and on phone searches — which is most local searching — it carries real weight.
The good news is that slowness almost always comes down to a small number of specific, fixable things rather than a vague need to rebuild. We measure it, name the files causing it, and fix those.
Site Speed
Why we measure it on our own site, in public
The number at the top of our homepage is the real load time of that page, measured by your browser, on your device, the moment you arrived. It isn't a graphic and it isn't an average from a report we chose.
We put it there because speed is the easiest claim in this industry to make and the easiest to check, and almost nobody who claims it lets you check. If our own site were slow, that number would say so.
Site Speed
What's realistic
On a site we build, under two seconds is the standard and the site isn't finished until it's there. On an existing site, how far we can get depends on what it was built with. A lean site with heavy images can usually be brought under two seconds in a day. A page builder loaded with plugins has a floor we can't get under without rebuilding, and if that's the situation we'll tell you what the floor is before you pay for the attempt.
Either way you get the before and after numbers, measured the same way, so the result is something you can verify rather than take on faith.
