Marketing for Plumbers

A burst pipe is the most urgent search in the trades. The customer is standing in water and calling the first three results. Everything depends on being one of them.

The emergency is won before the emergency

There is no time to persuade anyone during a plumbing emergency. The customer searches on a phone, taps a number in the map pack, and hires whoever answers and can come. If you're in position four you effectively don't exist for that job.

Getting into that three-pack takes months of unglamorous work: a complete Google profile, correct categories and service area, consistent listings, and a steady flow of reviews. It's all done in advance of an emergency that hasn't happened yet, which is why most plumbers never get around to it.

  • Google profile built for emergency intent — 24-hour attributes, correct categories, every suburb in the service area
  • A page per job type, not one "services" page — water heaters, slab leaks, repipes, drain cleaning, gas lines — each is its own search
  • Water heater content especially — high volume, high value, and a planned purchase where price ranges and brands actually get read
  • Real review volume and recency — for emergencies people barely read reviews, but they glance at the count and the stars
  • License number displayed — Texas requires it and it's a trust signal most sites treat as fine print
  • Spanish, done properly — big market around Houston, thin competition on that side of the search

Where the money actually is

Emergencies pay the bills and they're also the least profitable per hour once you count the disruption. The jobs that build a plumbing business are planned: water heater replacements, repipes, whole-house filtration, fixture remodels. Those customers research for days and read everything.

That's good news, because planned research is where content wins. "How much does a tankless water heater cost in Houston," "signs of a slab leak," "is a repipe worth it on a 1980s house" — these searches have real volume, low competition, and they bring people who are about to spend thousands. A plumber with fifteen pages like that quietly outperforms one with a prettier site and three pages.

It also compounds. A page answering a real question keeps producing calls for years, which is a different shape of return from ads that stop the day you stop paying.

What we'd fix in the first month

The Google profile, almost certainly. Categories, service area, services list, hours attributes. It's the fastest movement available to nearly every plumber we look at, and it's free.

Then the review system, because count and recency are what decide a tie in the map pack, and most plumbers are getting reviews by accident rather than on purpose.
