Missed Calls
The missed call nobody counts, and what it costs you
A missed call is not a missed call. It is a customer who already decided to buy, and then bought from somebody who picked up.
It is Saturday, eleven in the morning.
You run a small nail spa in Cypress.
Both chairs are full. Your hands are in somebody else's cuticles.
The phone starts buzzing on the counter.
You look at it. You cannot get it.
It rings out and goes quiet.
No voicemail. No text. Nothing.
Ever wonder who that was?
Here is the part that stings.
She didn't give up on getting her nails done. She gave up on you.
She called the next place on the list, and that one picked up.
That caller was the cheapest customer you will ever get. Already sold, already shopping, already dialing.
And she is the one nobody measures.
You track your rent. You track your supply orders.
Nobody tracks the calls that never turned into anything.
Here is what's in this one:
- What one missed call is really worth at your shop
- Why almost nobody leaves a voicemail anymore
- Three fixes, cheapest first, and none of them is a new phone system
- The voicemail greeting word for word, in English and Spanish
- Five myths that keep the leak wide open
- A plan you can finish this week
Let's go.
What One Missed Call Is Really Worth
Most owners guess low, because they price the call like a single sale.
It isn't a single sale. It's a regular you never met.
Run the math on paper once and you won't forget it.
| The math | Example numbers |
|---|---|
| Your average ticket | $55 |
| Times a regular comes back in a year | 8 |
| So one new regular is worth | $440 |
| Calls you miss in a normal week | 6 |
| How many of those would have booked | 2 |
| What that one week cost you | $880 |
| What a year of weeks like that costs | More than $45,000 |
Those numbers are made up, so you can see the shape of the math.
Put yours in the same boxes.
Ticket, visits per year, calls missed per week. Three numbers you already know.
Whatever comes out the bottom is the size of your leak.
And it is almost always bigger than whatever you were about to spend on ads.
If that lifetime number feels fuzzy, we took it apart in what one customer is actually worth.
Nobody Leaves Voicemails Anymore
Think about the last time you left one.
Not for a friend. For a business you had never used.
You can't remember, right?
Because you did what everybody does. You hung up and called the next one.
So your voicemail box isn't a safety net.
It's where the call goes to die quietly.
And here's what owners miss: that caller isn't loyal to you yet.
She has three tabs open and a baby shower on Saturday.
Whoever answers first wins, and it isn't even close.
That's why speed beats polish here.
A clumsy human reply in two minutes beats a perfect one tomorrow.
Three Fixes, Cheapest First
1. Forward the phone, on purpose
Most shops have a landline nobody is standing next to.
Forward it to a cell phone that lives in somebody's apron.
Not yours, if your hands are always busy. Pick the person whose hands aren't.
This costs nothing and takes four minutes with your phone company.
2. A greeting that books instead of apologizing
Your greeting today probably says the name of the shop and then beeps.
That's a dead end with a nice voice.
A greeting that works does three things in fifteen seconds.
It tells her you'll text back, it tells her when, and it gives her a second door.
3. An automatic text back to the missed call
This is the one that changes your week.
The moment a call goes unanswered, a text goes out on its own.
No app on her end. No download. Just a text from the number she dialed.
She can answer that in the grocery line, or once she's back in the car.
Plenty of people who would never leave a message will answer a text in ninety seconds.
And now you have her number, which the voicemail she didn't leave was never going to give you.
Setting it up is an afternoon, not a project. It's part of what we build on the call and form tracking side, and it's included in every plan on our pricing page.
The Greeting, Word for Word
Steal this. Change the name and the hours.
"Hi, you've reached Blossom Nail Spa in Cypress. We're with a client right now, so leave your name and I'll text you back within the hour. If you'd rather book yourself, go to blossomnails.com and pick a time. Gracias, we'll talk soon."
Count what that did.
It named the town. It gave a reason, not an excuse.
It promised a specific window: within the hour.
And it handed her a second way in while she's still holding the phone.
Now the Spanish one, because in Houston a good share of your callers will want it.
Si prefieres agendar tú misma, entra a blossomnails.com. Gracias."
One greeting, both languages, under thirty seconds.
Record it on your own phone. It doesn't need a studio.
Five Myths That Keep the Leak Open
"If it's important, they'll call back."
They will call somebody back. It won't be you.
"I'll just return calls at the end of the day."
By six o'clock she's booked. You're returning a call to somebody who already has an appointment.
"My regulars always reach me."
Sure. Regulars aren't the problem. New callers are the ones who vanish without a trace.
"I need a whole phone system for this."
You need call forwarding and one automatic text. Both are smaller than you think.
"More Google traffic will fix it."
More water in a leaking bucket is more water on the floor.
Fix the bucket first. It's the cheapest marketing you'll ever do.
Your Plan for This Week
- Tonight: call your own business from a number it doesn't know. Listen to what a stranger hears.
- Count for three days. Write down every missed call on your phone. A tally on the counter is enough.
- Do the math once with your real ticket and your real repeat visits. Write the yearly number down.
- Re-record the greeting with the script above, in both languages.
- Set up forwarding to a phone somebody is actually holding.
- Turn on an automatic text back so no missed call ends in silence.
- Check it in two weeks. Count the bookings that started as a missed call.
That's a couple of hours total, spread over a week.
No new ads. No new website. The same number of callers.
You just stopped losing the ones who were already trying to pay you.
One last thing.
If you don't know how many calls you're missing, you're guessing at the size of your own leak.
We'll call your business the way a stranger would, time how long it takes to reach a human, and tell you exactly where the call dies. No pitch. Ask us for the free audit.
Llamadas Perdidas
No te acuerdas, ¿verdad?
Ella no instala nada. No descarga nada.
"Hi, you've reached Blossom Nail Spa in Cypress. We're with a client right now. Leave your name and I'll text you back within the hour, or book yourself at blossomnails.com. Thanks."
No necesita estudio.
